The Ratings for Girls Aren’t Stellar Either

Vinyl’s poor ratings have made headlines, but Girls isn’t doing so hot either.

Girls is, for the most part, on its way out. The show will end after its sixth season, getting a fair and thought-out finale — one of the perks of not actually being canceled. It may be for that reason that it’s not high on the radar, including HBO’s. Although the network has done well to promote Girls, it’s certainly not going to grab many new eyes at this point.

Its ratings, for the most part, have been stagnant. This is according to Showbuzz Daily’s ratings analysis, which placed Girls’ premiere episode even lower than Vinyl’s. That actually doesn’t matter all that much. Besides the fact that Girls will be wrapping up, it has never been a performer for HBO. Its ratings have never been stellar, and it has never managed to get the critical appeal that Veep has.

Another reason why Girls’ poor performance isn’t an issue for HBO comes from a financial standpoint. While Vinyl has cost HBO a fortune, Girls is much cheaper to produce. In terms of poor ratings, HBO can afford to carry Girls until its natural end partially because of this.

While Girls has been, for the most part, a steady show for HBO, it has never been able to follow in the footsteps of other great HBO shows. It has a small, dedicated audience that will follow it until its end, and that’s all HBO really needs from it at this point.

It’s doubtful that the ratings from tonight’s episode will differ much from the season premiere’s, but that’s just par for the course when it comes to Girls.
