John Turturro’s new miniseries is coming to HBO this Summer.

The summer is usually not a great season for television. This has changed in the last few years as more network’s have started programing new series for the summertime, and HBO ran True Detective season two last summer. This summer, among the usual suspects, HBO will premiere a new miniseries starring John Turturro.

John Turturro, a man well-known for starring in various Cohen brothers movies, will now star in an eight-part miniseries this summer. This series, titled The Night Of,  will have a True Detective bent to it and will be about a police investigation that takes a critical eye to the criminal justice system. Okay, so maybe it will be more Law and Order than True Detective.

More from HBO

This will mark John Turturro’s first role in a HBO series of any kind.  The series is not entirely an original creation — it’s based off a BBC series, Criminal Justice, which John Turturro also starred in. This new take on it is being written and directed by Steven Zaillian, the man behind Schindler’s List and the producer of many other films, including American Gangster, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and Life Itself.

Oh, and he was also the executive producer of several episodes of Criminal Justice. The Night Of will star an ensemble cast featuring several actors that have been on Boardwalk Empire and True Detective.

Next: Game of Thrones is cooking something for the season five Blu-Ray.

Although the series is only currently scheduled for eight episodes and is being strictly labeled a miniseries, there are makings here for something more. If it does well it could become the next True Detective. Since True Detective season three is currently MIA, that wouldn’t be such a bad thing.
