Is True Detective Actually Over?

New rumors are popping up that Nic Pizzolatto’s True Detective may not get a third season after all.

After the end of True Detective’s second season, the fate of the series was in the air. HBO did not publicly renew it, though there were murmurings at the time that it was actually going to happen. The current rumor of choice is that True Detective might be dead after only two seasons, but there’s not all that much to go on either way.

This particular rumor comes from The Hollywood Reporter, which recently published a profile on HBO’s new programming head, replacing Michael Lombardo. Casey Bloys used be in charge of comedies, but now he gets to take on the entire beast. Although there is no quote from Bloys saying that True Detective is over, The Hollywood Reporter states that there are sources.

More from HBO

Apparently it’s more likely at this point for Nic Pizzolatto to work on a new project and not a third season of True Detective. It should be noted that The Hollywood Reporter’s sources are not named, and there is no other information to go on. The decision on whether or not to continue with True Detective lie with both Bloys and Pizzoatto, and neither one is talking about it.

The first season of True Detective was a mega-hit but the second season couldn’t keep up the pace. For now, nothing concerning the fate of True Detective has actually changed. It’s true that Pizzolatto does have other projects in the pipeline with HBO, but that’s the only thing we know for sure.

It will be interesting to see whether Casey Bloys is as supportive of True Detective as Michael Lombardo was, because that could play a part in the ultimate fate of True Detective.
