HBO Will Debut Three New Comedies in the Fall

HBO has set premiers for three comedies this fall, including Sarah Jessica Parker’s Divorce.

HBO’s biggest shows arguably all air at the same time. They include Game of Thrones, Veep, and Silicon Valley. When those three are off, well, there’s not all that much going on. Not that HBO doesn’t try to spice things up, like with the upcoming Vice Principals, but so far nothing has stuck like that impressive trifecta.

In the same report from Variety about Westworld actually getting scheduled, it’s also mentioned that HBO has set premieres for three new comedies. They aren’t all created equal. Divorce will be Sarah Jessica Parker’s first return to the network after the end of Sex and the City, and that’s big deal. The other two, Insecure and High Maintenance, will premiere alongside it.

Insecure is based on the material of the websites The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl  by Issa Rae, and High Maintenance is based on a webseries of the same name about a pot delivery guy.

It’s nice to see HBO doubling down on comedy, though their direction seems to moving away from the sort of ground that Togetherness covered. It seems that there just isn’t any room for more quiet, introspective comedies on television. Fall is going to be big for HBO’s comedies, and those shows will make an interesting package with Westworld.

None of the above shows have a premiere date outside of the slightly vague “fall,” though it’s possible that HBO will want to at least pair Divorce and Westworld together, two high-profile shows.

Only six episodes were ordered for High Maintenance, so it’s more like an experiment than an actual first season.

Next: Westworld is coming in the Fall.

When there are still five weeks left of Game of Thrones, it’s hard to think too hard about the future.
