The Leftovers has won a Peabody Award, one of the most prestigious awards in entertainment.

The Leftovers has only a single season left, but it’s set to bow out on a high note. The show has been a critical darling — though season one needed some time to grow — but has had trouble securing an audience. That commitment to artistic vision has paid off, because The Leftovers has taken home of the most prestigious media awards out there.

It’s always interesting when something not super-popular wins an award. Awards tend to have high popularity requirements, but apparently that didn’t get in the way of the roar of the critics this time.

The Leftovers, among several other HBO projects, has won a Peabody Award. The rest of the winners list is an interesting read, with several “alternative” choices on there. Netflix’s Master of None won, as did Jessica Jones and Cary Fukunaga’s Beasts of no Nation. Perhaps this will take some of the sting out of being passed over at the Oscars.

The winners are some of the finest shows out there, though they don’t represent the usual suspects. Outside of perhaps Mr. Robot, which has been a huge talking point since it premiered. If nothing else, this year’s winners prove that it’s a good time to be watching TV.

Jon Stewart, who has an upcoming project with HBO, also won a Peabody Award forThe Daily Show. The show itself has won twice before.

Next: The cast of The Leftovers had a panel at this year's Vulture Festival.

If there were any lingering doubters out there, no, The Leftovers is not an easy show. But it’s worth the effort, and it’s great to see it getting such high recognition.
