Celebrate the 15th Anniversary of Six Feet Under With a Marathon

It’s the 15th anniversary of Six Feet Under, and HBO is celebrating with a marathon of the entire series.

When talking about the classics of HBO, it feels like Six Feet Under frequently gets the short end of the stick. Sure, there’s The Sopranos, but Six Feet Under offered a different take on the family dynamic. It stands as not only one of the best family dramas on television, but may also be the best that HBO has ever produced.

The lives of the Fischer family and their funeral home delivered some blisteringly emotional moments, and starting each episode off with a death let viewers know that this wasn’t a series for the weak-willed. It’s been 15 years since Six Feet Under premiered, and HBO2 is airing the entire series starting today.

Six Feet Under also has one of the most memorable opening sequences, which is something it shares with the other great HBO series of the time.

More from HBO

HBO has never had a show quite like this, and outside of American Beauty it stands as Alan Ball’s most powerful work.  Six Feet Under featured a pre-Dexter Michael C. Hall and Peter Krause before he effectively invaded network TV. There would be no proper way of going over all the great performances in Six Feet Under outside of listing the entire cast.

While a marathon is a nice way to celebrate a truly unique series, the entirety of Six Feet Under has been available on HBO Go for some time. Still, it’s nice to celebrate in the communal way that a marathon allows. True Blood, another Alan Ball project, ended up falling far short of what Six Feet Under achieved.

Next: Game of Thrones experiences ratings low.

Hopefully his new show, a musical drama titled Virtuoso, will be more Six Feet Under than True Blood.
