Vice Principals Won’t be Around for Long
Danny McBride’s Vice Principals will only have two seasons
It’s common for television, especially american television, to go on for season after season. This can have the adverse effect of killing a show. That’s not an avenue that Danny McBride is interested in taking, it seems. Vice Principals hasn’t premiered on HBO yet, but when it does, there will only be about 18 episodes to look forward to.
The news comes directly from McBride at the premiere of Vice Principals:
"“The whole series is only 18 episodes and that’s it. We just wanted to make a really long movie. It’s one school year and a complete story.”"
So there you have it. While it’s a tad disappointing, Eastbound & Down only had 29 episodes — though they were spread over the course of four seasons. This is more in line with the British way of doing things, in which a series only lasts for a season or two by design and has a short episode count. McBride also revealed the original screenplay had been floating around since 2006.

The 18 episodes will be spread out over two seasons. On one hand, we know that Vice Principals won’t be around long enough to run itself into the ground. Not he other, it’s a little odd to go into a series already knowing that the end is coming. Especially when it’s not a miniseries.
Co-creator Jody Hill added that the entire series had already been shot. It will now take a little over a year for us to see the entire thing.
A short series was already semi-expected from Vice Principals due to the aforementioned situation with Eastbound & Down, so it’s not a major surprise by any means. Let’s just hope that those 18 episodes are gold, because there won’t be an any more after that.
Next: The Night Of is already a hit.
In a couple of years, however, we could be talking about the next Danny McBride HBO series. So there is that, we suppose.
