Any Given Wednesday is making a name for itself

Any Given Wednesday is a new late night show on HBO. Even if you haven’t seen a single episode, you are likely familiar with it from the commercials that HBO has aired during its Sunday night shows. Primarily it’s a show about sports, but there is pop culture thrown in there as well. Last night Aaron Rodgers appeared and said some sobering words about concussions in the NFL.

For those that don’t follow football, Aaron Rodgers is a Quarterback for the Green Bay Packers, and has had more that one concussion. Part of the problem, according to him, is a lack of self-monitoring. Even though there are doctors on the sidelines and cameras watching the players, some players don’t feel comfortable reporting that they might not feel well. Considering how serious a concussion can be, that’s a bit of a problem.

Bill Simmons has had major success writing for ESPN and then his own podcast, and he’s a good host for this sort of show. He doesn’t just sit there in silence when Rodgers talks about his experiences; he gives the story the respect it deserves. Rodgers is a guy that takes concussions and head injuries seriously. It’s a problem that has always plagued football, but it only recently has become a more public talking point.

Next: Let's talk about HBO's awards trend.

Any Given Wednesday is the sort of sports talk show that even those not obsessed with sports could watch, and that gives it a greater chance for success. Not to mention its pop culture leanings as well. It also helps that Bill Simmons is a well-respected voice in sports writing and media. Any Given Wednesday, like Real Time with Bill Maher, is one of the few big shows that HBO doesn’t air on Sunday.
