Will HBO have more Crime Drama After The Night Of?

The Night Of is a hit, and that could mean more dark drama

Much like the fist season of True Detective, The Night Of is something special. It hasn’t captured the pop culture world the same that way that Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson did, but the two shows are ultimately very different. The Night Of is ultimately all about the case of Naz, and it takes its sweet time.

If we were to ignore True Detective’s second season — though it doesn’t necessarily warrant that — HBO has been doing very well with crime drama in the past few years. It’s a type of show that HBO hasn’t had a huge amount of success with in quite some time, The Wire being the last notable exception. Boardwalk Empire has more in common with The Sopranos, and is a bit far removed from what we’re talking about here.

The Night Of’s ratings have been study, but it’s not a really a runaway hit in that department yet. And frankly, since its only set to be a limited series, that doesn’t really matter. It would be a safe bet that the 2017 Emmy’s will be filled with nominations for The Night Of, and that could lead to more crime shows in the future.

HBO has been able to tap into something vital here. Assuming that they continue to find projects like True Detective and The Night Of, the network could become the to go-to place for that sort of television. Nothing has been announced yet, and The Night Of is only half over, but the future is wide open.

Next: Ballers will return for another season.

It’s almost a shame that The Night Of won’t have more seasons, but that will keep it a one hit wonder and make room for something else.
