Can Game of Thrones Conquer the Emmys?
Game of Thrones has its work cut out for it at the Emmys
HBO has always been a force to be reckoned with when it comes to the Emmys. Many of its shows have been nominated one time or another, though most are nominated consistently. This doesn’t stand true for Girls, which has been snubbed time and time again. This could be the year for Game of Thrones — actually, it feels like every year could be the year of Game of Thrones.
There’s no denying that Game of Thrones had a strong season this year, but it feels as if the competition gets stiffer and stiffer. While that’s good for television in general, it won’t necessarily be good for HBO. Even though its ratings haven’t been anything special, Mr. Robot has become a force to be reckoned with. Not to mention the usual contenders such as Homeland and House of Cards.

In some ways it feels like this is Game of Thrones’ last real chance at the Emmys. The show will be a round for another two seasons, but they will be shorter and air at other times than the spring. They could end up being huge knockouts, and shows tend to get a bit of an award boost in their final season. But there will also be less episodes, and therefore less chances to take home gold.
Game of Thrones has 23 nominations at the Emmys this year, which is more than any other series. Yes, it is going to win some of them. But so is Mr. Robot and House of Cards. Some actors really stepped forward this season, like Masie Williams and Lena Headey, but their nominated together in the same category. 23 nominations is a lot, but it’s not indicative of the number of potential wins.

The Emmys will air September 18th. Regardless of how it turns out, this is going to prove an exciting year for Game of Thrones.
