Issa Rae Brings Insecure in October

October is going to be a huge month for HBO, overwhelmingly so. Besides the launch of the next Game of Thrones Westworld, we also have Sarah Jessica Parker’s Divorce and Issa Rae’s Insecure. Insecure is co-created by Issa Rae and Larry Willmore, a man who has some time on his hands now that Comedy Central cancelled The Nightly Show.

Insecure follows a fictionalized version of Issa Rae as she attempts to navigate modern life. The overall feel has something of Girls in it, but a decidedly different take on finding yourself. HBO recently released the official new trailer.

The fantasy sequence involving the mirror feels al little like something out of Ally McBeal. Even though they explore some of the same themes, there is very little of Girls’ DNA in Insecure, which is a good thing. Also, if “white texts” is not currently a thing, it really should be.

Insecure is based on Issa Rae’s web series and book The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl and follows her as she tries to navigate her way in the world. The first season will run for eight episodes — two more than High Maintenance — and kick off on October 9th at 10:30. Insecure looks to be more on the lighthearted side, even as it tackles the issue of identity. That’s something that HBO could use right about now and should pair well with Divorce.

Next: Westworld's Thandie Newton talks nudity.

HBO hasn’t had a series quite like Insecure; a show that explores a modern black female perspective. Hopefully Insecure will be able to hit the spot, though we’re not too worried. Issa Rae is definitely someone who knows what she’s doing. We’ll find out for sure when Insecure, and the rest of HBO’s fall season, kicks off in a month.
