The last (?) trailer for Divorce is here

For those that somehow don’t know by now, Divorce is set to be Sarah Jessica Parker’s return to HBO. A married couple — husband played by Thomas Hayden Church — decide to call it quits after having some trouble. This isn’t a Kramer vs. Kramer situation; it’s a more modern, nuanced take on the subject. Divorce is arguably the most hyped new show for HBO after Westworld, and it could be a great comeback for Sarah Jessica Parker.

Without further, here’s the new trailer:

More from Show Snob

At this point it would have been understandable for the new trailer to mostly show footage we’ve already seen — that’s usually the case as a premiere gets closer. That’s not the case here. Frances and Robert, both comforted and egged on by their own friends and lawyers, navigate the murky waters of divorce. There is viciousness here, but it’s mostly lighthearted and played for laughs. Or grins, at least.

There’s also a great micro scene with Dean Winters as a bloodthirsty lawyer. Excellent casting, that.

Divorce is the story about two people falling out of love, perhaps hating each other, and then rediscovering the little things that made them all in love in the first place. It’s far too early to tell if Divorce will end in reconciliation, and it would be no fun to guess the ending anyway. This is a show about the journey, and so far, it feels vibrant and alive in a way that many other shows about relationships don’t.

Next: Five seasons of Westworld?

If this is the last look we get at Divorce before it premieres next month, that would be just fine. Much like Westworld, the trailers for Divorce have really hit it out of the park. The show already feels like a winner and without the hype baggage that Westworld currently has on its shoulders. The two are, of course, completely different animals. Hopefully we’re currently living with a version of HBO that can allow both of them to happily co-exist.

Divorce will premiere on October 9th, a week after Westworld.
