HBO Conquered the Emmys with 22 wins
Game of Thrones Breaks Emmy records for HBO
The 68th annual Emmy Awards were last night and it was all around a good show. Jimmy Kimmel proved, once again, to be a great host and even though Stranger Things wasn’t nominated, several of the starring kids were on hand to pass out peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. It happened, look it up. It also proved to be another winning ceremony for HBO, as they lead the pack with 22 awards.
It was a little shaky at first. There were some early loses for Veep, and even though Game of Thrones dominated — “Battle of the Bastards,” specifically — it didn’t pull in a single acting award. This was Lena Headey’s season, and it’s a shame that she didn’t win. Silicon Valley also came up empty handed. Veep was at least able to snag two major awards: Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy for Julia Louis-Dreyfus. It marks the fifth win for Julia Louis Dreyfus for playing Selena Meyer. If she wins once more she will have broken a record.

In terms of total domination, however, we need to talk about Game of Thrones. “The Battle of the Bastards” has now won six Emmys, winning in every category it has been nominated in. Game of Thrones, after winning Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series, now holds the record of Most Wins for a Drama Series. That’s 38, by the way.
Even though HBO broke records and is on its way to breaking more, it wasn’t always a sure thing. There were plenty of categories that HBO lost, and FX was hot on their heels with a total of 18 wins. HBO taking home top honors is not longer a sure thing and is only going to get more and more difficult. And for those still wondering, no, Beyonce’s Lemonade did not win.
If there is one thing that can be taken away from this year’s show, it’s that Game of Thrones has a real chance of going down as the most celebrated drama in television history. Assuming that it isn’t already.
