Jeffery Wright Talks Secrets and Journeys on Westworld
Jeffery Wright sat down to talk about Bernard and where the show is going.
Outside of the show itself and Discover Westworld, most of the information that we get about that world has been from interviews. Evan Rachel Wood has been the one doing most of them, but now it’s Jeffery Wright’s turn. Wright plays Bernard, a complicated man that may or may not be human. The jury is still out on that, but Wright does concede that he knows a bit more about where Westworld is going than some of the other actors.
Jeffery Wright sat down with Collider, and though he doesn’t share where exactly Westworld is going, he does enough teasing to make us believe it’s somewhere we want to be. Not the actual theme park, of course, we can’t afford that. Wright touches on all of the world building that Westworld has been furiously doing, and hints at the payoff.
"The first season is very much about stacking up the layers of narrative and, at the same time, digging down through those layers to understand the forces behind them. We really don’t discover fully what Westworld is for this first season, until we get there. The first 10 episodes are the journey."

So, no, we may not get all of our answers this season, but we do at least know that we’ll get something. Westworld has walked a fine line of adding layer after layer and sucking us in without creating too much frustration at all of the secrets. Season 2 could be a little different, and we would welcome a more relaxed pace.
Wright also talks about how much he knows about where this is all going. Without spilling any beans, of course.
"“I was given a fair amount of information, after we shot the pilot, about where we were headed because Bernard is so much at the center of things and is the onion peeler for the audience. The nature of his job there is to peel back the layers of the onion and re-patch them, as though they’re pristine.”"
After Ford, Bernard is the closest character to the heart of the park that we’ve seen so far. The interview doesn’t touch on Bernard’s Host-like qualities, and Wright doesn’t bring that up.
