HBO is now Available on Amazon Prime
You can now subscribe to HBO and Cinemax on Amazon Prime, no bundle necessary.
It’s a new day for cord-cutters out there. While it felt like the moment was both inevitable and slow-going, more and more networks are seeing it as an opportunity. Fewer people are watching live TV now, choosing instead to choose stream at their own leisure. Some people are just don’t want to pay for expensive bundles of channels that they’re not going to watch. HBO has seen the growing movement, and has decided to embrace it.

As of today, Amazon Prime subscribers can now also add-on subscriptions to HBO and Cinemax. Showtime made headlines when it chose to partner with Amazon and Hulu in similar fashion. The price for HBO is $14.99 per month, which is consistent with HBO Now. Cinemax costs a little less, at $9.99 per month. This is all part of Amazon Channels, a service that allows you to add-on other subscriptions and requires Amazon Prime. This is not quite the same as Playstation Vue, Sony’s competing service. It was a big deal when HBO decided to un-bundle itself for Playstation Vue a few months back.
Through Amazon Channels you can also sign up for a one month trial of HBO in case you’re not sure about the whole thing. For regular subscribers with access to HBO Go, this service is mostly going to be redundant. Unless, of course, you like the idea of having HBO better incorporated into the Prime experience. There is something to be said for that, we suppose, though many of HBO’s classic shows are already available on Prime without a HBO subscription.

It’s great that dedicated cord-cutters now have more ways to watch HBO, and we’re all for ditching cable if possible. A word of caution: pairing Amazon Prime with a slew of add-on subscriptions is going to balloon the cost, potentially putting it more in line with regular cable. Just something to chew on.
