HBO did well at the Critic’s Choice Awards, but they Didn’t Conquer
The Critic’s Choice Awards were good to HBO, but did double dipping ultimately hurt it?
The Critics Choice Awards aired last night on A&E, hosted by Silicon Valley’s T.J Miller. The awards tend to skew a little differently than the more populist Golden Globes and Emmy awards, giving some indie productions a bigger spotlight. In terms of HBO that doesn’t add up to all that much. After all, HBO produces high-quality, expensive content. And Game of Thrones is basically a guaranteed winner anyway. HBO managed to pull in four wins last night. That’s four wins out of 22 nominations.

Many of HBO’s nominations came from categories in which it was double-dipping; categories where it had multiple nominations. It was therefore inevitable that there would be a struggle to pull in a high number of wins, and there were instances in which HBO’s multiple nominations still came out with a loss. Here is a list of wins:
- Silicon Valley for Best Comedy Series
- Game of Thrones for Best Drama Series
- Evan Rachel wood, Westworld, for Best Actress in a Drama Series
- Thandie Newton, Westworld, for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series
It wasn’t a bad night at all for Westworld, which took home two deserved wins. It’s also nice that Silicon Valley was able to beat out Veep, but that will swing around in time for next year’s Emmy awards. Game of Thrones, of course, one best drama. But there were a fair share of losses, including plenty for Game of Thrones actors. Thandie Newton actually beat out both Emilia Clarke and Lena Headey, so maybe it’s time to accept that Westworld is a real force to be reckoned with.

HBO double-dipping in so many categories may speak highly of the network’s shows, but it also makes it more difficult to pull in awards. Not to mention the fact that TV is basically fantastic right now and competition is fierce.
