Damon Lindelof Likens the Final Season of The Leftovers to The Godfather

In a first look at the third and final season of The Leftovers, showrunner Damon Lindelof gets real deep.

There isn’t a lot known about the final season of The Leftovers. That is mostly by design; co-creator and showrunner Damon Lindelof wants to keep things as quiet as possible. There was such a long silence from the show that we were beginning to wonder just what was going on, but then the silence was broken. And now we’re getting the first bit of concrete information.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Damon Lindelof gives first look at what to expect from The Leftovers going forward. First off, there is finally an explanation for its move to Australia:

"“Australia is the end of the world geographically and our show is about the end-of-the-world emotionally…And there’s also something about Australian cinema — it’s primal, ancient and spiritual — that felt like it fit The Leftovers, whether it’s Mad Max movies or Walkabout, or Waking Fright or Peter Weir movies.”"

The main reason for the move seems to be mainly metaphorical, which fits perfectly in with what we’ve come to expect from the series over the past couple of years. Lindelof also goes on to liken the new season to The Godfather, specifically in terms of the relationship between Kevin and his father, who will be joining him down under.  That’s a pretty heavy-hitter to be referencing, though it’s obvious that Lindelof has a deep love of film and film history.

Finally, viewers are warned not to expect all of the answers from the finale. The Leftovers has never really been about answers, and Lindelof is aware of that. The shows shifts and changes, and doesn’t have a real “mythology,” as Lindelof puts it:

"“We don’t want to frustrate the audience but The Leftovers plays by its own set of rules and will continue to do so.”"
