Reminder: The Young Pope kicks off this Month

HBO first new series of the winter season, The Young Pope, kicks off a tad earlier than the others.

We’ve been talking about The Young Pope for a while now, and for good reason. It has a ridiculous cast (James Cromwell, Diane Keaton, Jude Law) and is helmed by Oscar winner Paolo Sorrentino. That’s as good enough a reason as any to be excited for a new project. It’s also a unique case because the fist season has already aired in other territories and a second season might be on the way.

More from HBO

Normally, it wouldn’t be necessary to send out a reminder of when a show is starting. The Young Pope is special because it is preceding the rest of HBO’s winter lineup by a month. Big Little Lies, Crashing, and the final season of Girls will all premiere in February. There could be a couple of reason’s for HBO scheduling The Young Pope early: they understandably do not want to overcrowded February, and they believe enough in it for it to stand on its own. Both would be fair points.

The Young Pope premieres on January 15th at 9 PM EST. We will be recapping it, and hopefully you will join us for the sinister, campy goodness. For those that haven’t been following the genesis of the show, it’s about the first American pope and his quest for power. It’s about as tonally close to House of Cards as HBO currently gets. The first season will run or 10 episodes and did fairly well overseas, so it will be interesting to see what the reception will be like in North America.

Next: Girls is an important show, but not a classic.

There is nothing epic to be found in HBO winter slate, which is totally alright with us. Between Game of Thrones and Westworld, HBO has that fairly covered almost the entire rest of the year.
