It’s Westworld vs. Game of Thrones at the Golden Globes

This Sunday’s Golden Globes are really just a showdown between Westworld and Game of Thrones.

The Golden Globes are sometimes a strange event. You know, like when The Martian won for Best Comedy or Musical. Those odd wins and nominations are, thankfully, usually the problem on the film side of things, and not television. The Golden Globes are also good to HBO, and right now they’re in a fine position to take advantage of that. The network has more nominations than any other, though that does include some double-dipping. Specifically, that relates to Westworld and Game of Thrones.

More from Show Snob

Game of Thrones has been a strong awards contended in the past few years, especially when it comes to last season’s ‘Battle of the Bastards.’ But now it has to deal with Westworld, a show that is getting more accolades than Game of Thrones’ first season did. Granted, Thrones did pave the way for it by putting genre shows in the spotlight. Both will be battling it out for the big drama award of the night, Best Television Drama. Not only that, but Thandie Newton will have to duke it out with Leana Headey for Best Performance by an Actress.

We’re going to have to give it to Game of Thrones for Best Drama, even if George R. R. Martin thinks otherwise. Season 6 of Game of Thrones was incredibly strong, and there’s a good reason that ‘Battle of the Bastards’ continues to sweep awards. When it comes to Best Performance by an Actress, however, we’re going to have to take a step back. While Lena Headey deserves all the love in the world for her portrayal as Cersei Lannister, she hasn’t had all that much luck in getting it in the past. It is, frankly, more likely than neither her nor Thandie Newton will win. But we wouldn’t mind being wrong.

Next: Westworld is asking for fan art on social media.

There’s something exciting about having HBO’s two biggest dramas going head-to-head with each other. Of course, they could end up losing both awards, which is totally possible. That’s all part of the fun, though.
