Can HBO Recover from the Golden Globes at the PGA Awards?

The PGA Awards will offer HBO a chance to recover from the Golden Globes, but how high of a chance?

A few days ago the PGA awards (Producer’s Guild of America) announced their television nominees. That was before HBO got slammed at the Golden Globes, putting serious doubt on the network’s ability to dominate award shows going forward. It would normally be a forgone conclusion that HBO would take home a few PGA wins, but that’s not the case anymore. The narrative has changed.

Fortunately, HBO has a number of irons in the fire here. That is to say, HBO is up for a healthy amount of PGA awards. Check it out:

  • The Night Of for the David L. Wolper Award for Outstanding Producer of Long-Form Television
  • Game of Thrones and Westworld for the Norman Felton Award for Outstanding Producer of Episodic Television, Drama
  • Silicon Valley and Veep for the Danny Thomas Award for Outstanding Producer of Episodic Television, Comedy
  • Last Week Tonight and Real Time with Bill Maher for Outstanding Producer of Live Entertainment & Talk Television
  • Sesame Street for Outstanding Children’s Program

More from HBO

For simplification’s sake we have listed the individual HBO nominations without the list of eligible producers. You can check out the full list over at Deadline. It’s a fairly good spread for HBO, but that was also the case for the Golden Globes. The competition is just too fierce to assume that HBO is going to be able to win big, and that’s not just the case with the PGA awards. The landscape of television has changed.

There will be another matchup between Game of Thrones and Westworld, but they will have to beat out Better Call Saul, House of Cards, and Stranger Things. The Crown was not nominated, so that’s one obstacle out of the way. This does increase HBO’s chances of a win, but we’re not going to say that Stranger Things wouldn’t deserve it if it did win. In terms of Veep and Silicon Valley, Atlanta and Blackish are the competitors to watch. That one is a little tougher to call, but we’re going to give the edge to Atlanta.

We’re going to stay cautiously optimistic about HBO’s chances at the PGA awards, but this has so far been a very interesting award season. The PGA awards will be handed out on January 28th
