The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is Coming in the Spring

It’s been six years in the making

Projects that involve Oprah always end up in the spotlight, at least to some degree. That once again proves true for The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, a project that we actually haven’t heard from in a while. In fact, we haven’t heard much about the film since the summer, when Rose Byrne signed on. That has thankfully changed, as we now have a premiere date for this new Oprah production.

According to Deadline, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks will premiere on April 22nd. The book came out back in 2010 and gained some deserved attention or telling the story of Henrietta Lacks, whose cervical cancer cells have been used in medical research and is now the oldest human cell line in use. This HBO adaptation began soon after the book came out – Oprah quickly teamed with Alan Ball to produce it. It’s a bit impressive that it managed to stay together for six years.

The movie will star Oprah as Henrietta Lacks’ daughter, Deborah, as she learns about what happened to her mother’s cells. Rose Byrne plays Rebecca Skoot, the journalist who teamed with Lacks to discover the truth and who wrote the book.

It’s likely that HBO is going to expect The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks to get some award attention, as both Confirmation and All the Way did. This is, after all, a prestige HBO movie in a long line of other successes. We’ve been waiting on this one for a while and are pretty excited to see it coming together. There’s no trailer to speak of just yet, but April isn’t too far away, so expect HBO to start pushing it soon.
