The Leftovers Renewed for Season Three, Which will be its Last

The Leftovers has been renewed for a third season, but it will serve as the show’s finale.
The Leftovers is one of the best and strangest dramas that HBO currently has in its roster. To balance out its critical acclaim, its ratings have been abysmal. Whether it’s the subject matter or something else turning viewers off, The Leftovers is watched by few. That may have something to do with why it won’t be getting a fourth season.

According to Deadline, the third season of The Leftovers will be its last. The Leftovers will being getting an actual ending, which is more than Deadwood ever got. So at least there is that to be thankful for. Even though it’s sad to say goodbye, there is something good about the series ending in its prime. Being largely a mystery series, having The Leftovers on for too long brings the risk of it all falling apart.

Sometimes it’s just better to let it go. This is something that British television tends to do, and something that American TV wrestles with. Co-creator Damn Lindelof had a statement to go along with the announcement:
"“I have never, ever experienced the level of creative support and trust that I have received from HBO during the last two seasons of The Leftovers…As we finished our most recent season, it became clear to us that the series as a whole was following the same model…the most exciting thing for us as storytellers would be to bring The Leftovers to a definitive end. And by ‘definitive,’ we mean ‘wildly ambiguous but hopefully mega-emotional,’…”"
The statement is ambiguous as to where the cancellation decision actually came from, which is really how it should be when it comes to preserving business relationships.
Next: HBO has several shows up for Golden Globes.
If The Leftovers is able to pull of the ending the show deserve, it’s possible that it could resurrect Damon Lindelof’s relationship among fans and viewers.
