Insecure comes to HBO NOW early

HBO’s fall season is almost upon us, and believe it or not, it includes shows that aren’t Westworld. HBO is doing an admirable job with promoting the other upcoming shows, but it’s tough to compete with the violent western monster. Insecure is one of the new series coming up, and HBO is now trying to give it a bit of a leg up.

HBO NOW users can now stream the first episode of Insecure early. That’s about three weeks early, by the way, considering that it’s not supposed to premiere until October 9th. Westworld gets its own night on October 2nd, with both Insecure and Divorce coming the following week.

More from HBO

This is just another perk for HBO NOW subscribers, and doesn’t seem to be active for regular HBO users. Streaming the first episode early is a good way to build hype and is  a nice way to remind people who there are other series coming besides Westworld. Insecure’s toughest competition isn’t going to come from Westworld anyway, it’s going to come from Sarah Jessica Parker’s Divorce.

HBO so far hasn’t used a similar tactic with Divorce — perhaps they’re betting on that the return of Sarah Jessica Parker will be a big enough pull. Either way, HBO’s upcoming comedy lineup is strong. The new shows have a greater drama angle than say, Silicon Valley or Veep, putting them more in line with Girls and the cancelled Togetherness.

Insecure follows the life of “awkward black girl” Issa Dee, played by creator Issa Rae. It will officially premiere on October 2nd, but make sure to drop us a line if you choose to watch it early. And have HBO NOW, of course.
