When will HBO Renew Westworld?

It’s not out of the question at this point to expect HBO to renew Westworld as soon as possible.

There is an argument to be made that we shouldn’t look to the future too soon. Westworld hasn’t even aired its second episode, after all. But that doesn’t necessarily matter, since the new show is already the hit that we knew it would be. It is therefore valid to wonder when HBO will renew Westworld for a second season. More after that wouldn’t hurt, either.

We already know that the plan is for Westworld to be around for at least five seasons. That was built into the show from the start and it’s likely something that HBO is already keenly aware of. For a new show we usually wouldn’t expect HBO to renew it until after it has finished airing, but it’s not such a clear-cut case anymore.

More from HBO

The first season of High Maintenance isn’t over yet but HBO recently renewed it. Granted, High Maintenance is a much cheaper show to produce than Westworld. But Westworld and other shows like it — big, expensive dramas — are the real bread and butter of the network. The first episode was garnered higher rating than any other new HBO show in the past several years. It’s not a question of whether or not Westworld will be renewed — it’s a question of when.

HBO famously renewed Vinyl after the first episode aired and then decided to can the whole thing. Vinyl was insanely expensive and was underperforming. Westworld may also be expensive, but it’s set to be the biggest thing since Game of Thrones. It would be surprising if HBO chose to wait out the season until announcing a second season. It’s more likely that we’ll see a press release similar to what they ended up doing with High Maintenance, maybe at the season halfway point.

Westworld is here to stay, regardless of when HBO chooses to renew it. It would be best to make peace with the android Hosts now rather than later.
