The Girls exit interview is an absolute must read for fans of the series, or even those that are still curious.

The final season of Girls is about a month away, and that means we’re at the end of an era. Watching Girls was not a smooth-sailing experience, but that always felt part of the design. To discuss the past and future, the main cast of the series (Lena Dunham, Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet) sat down for an impressive feature in Glamour, billed as their “exit interview.”

Instead of being interviewed by someone at the magazine, the group is instead interviewed by one of their own, showrunner and executive producer Jenni Konner. It makes for an interesting and revealing experience. The cast is asked various questions, such as the most and least satisfying parts of their job. It’s Zosia Mamet (Shoshanna) who gives the most interesting answer here:

"“The most satisfying part was getting to play a person who was so intrinsically opposite of me in, like, every atom of my being. The dissatisfying thing was that I came to know this human that I created. And love her. And now I miss her.”"

Shosh quickly went from annoying to one of the best characters on the show. She became some needed comic relief; we only wish we could have spent more time with her in Japan. Further in, Jemima Kirke gives voice to a problem that almost derailed the show completely: season 2. Kirke isn’t too happy with how season 2 turned out, and neither were many other people at the time. Dunham reveals that Kirke attempted to leave around that time, and Kirke reveals that the season was “traumatic” for her.

The details of her, or any of their problems with season 2 are glossed over. But it’s nice to have someone just mention it. The entire interview is worth reading. A lot of their regrets have to do with communication, control, and lack thereof of both. It’s very much in line with what the show is all about.

The final season of Girls will kick off on February 12th.
