Will Curb Your Enthusiasm Bring the Magic?

Can Curb Your Enthusiasm still compete?

A lot has happened at HBO since Curb Your Enthusiasm ended its eight season. Veep happened, for one, and has become one of the most consistently funny series on television. Larry David worked on a play, but for the most part he disappeared from the spotlight. The news that Curb Your Enthusiasm would be returning was met with an impressive amount of fanfare. The fact that it’s expected in 2017 isn’t too shabby either.

Curb Your Enthusiasm and Deadwood face similar obstacles. That is, can either revival compete after being off the air for so long? Next to nothing is known about the Curb revival except that Larry David is returning. HBO has more than enough times to iron out the details, but it’s not actually clear that there are people out there clamoring for more of Larry David. A revival is always exciting, but it comes with its own set of risks.

The main different between Curb and Deadwood, besides being entirely different genres, is that Curb had a fantastic run while Deadwood failed to really grab an audience. Fans are calling for the revival of Deadwood, while most would agree that Curb Your Enthusiasm ended after a respectable run. Producing more runs the risk of seeming like a cash grab. We’re not quite that cynical. Yet.

At least Curb doesn’t need to really be any different. It’s Larry David. That’s either a big enough draw at this point or it isn’t, there is no reason to believe that the show will be making any drastic changes in its ninth season. There is something comforting in that. It will definitely be interesting to see if Curb can bring in similar numbers as Veep or Silicon Valley, but it doesn’t necessarily have to. And that’s okay too.
