The new, longer Westworld trailer is finally here

Westworld could very well be the most ambitious project that HBO has undertaken since Game of Thrones. That’s saying a lot, but the proof is out there. Take for example, the new Westworld trailer that HBO let loose on the world yesterday. The trailer debuted last night during HBO’s primetime showings, preceding at least both The Night Of and Vice Principals.

Frankly, seeing it twice wouldn’t be enough. Before we unpack it, feast your eyes below:

There are some gorgeous, sweeping landscapes featured here. There’s also a lot of Evan Rachel Wood, the Westworld spokesperson. Of course, all that beauty is manufactured by Dr. Robert Ford, played by Anthony Hopkins. There’s also some great android action here; we can see them being made and then shot. Those fancy new milk-ventilation holes are really something, huh?

The trailer shows off all the main characters and gives the general plot setup. Westworld is a destination world set up to satisfy the needs and wants of its visitors. Like any good sic-fi story, they use unaware androids to get the job done. There’s a big hint of Blade Runner here, as well as a heaping helping of the spaghetti western genre. It’s an incredibly unique, fascinating work that could be HBO’s next hit. Well, unique except for the existence of the original film.

We also get a good look at Ed Harris as the villainous Man in Black, and he’s brining the heat big time. The new trailer is, for lack of a better word, intoxicating. The world of Westworld is a complex, breathing thing. If the actual series achieves even half of what the trailer brings, it’s going to be worth watching. Over and over, probably.

The future of sci-fi could very well rest on the success of Westworld. And so far, there is very little reason to worry. It’s going to be an even longer wait now until Westworld’s October premiere.
