Westworld, Game of Thrones, and others score Writers Guild Award nominations for HBO.

The Writers Guild Awards celebrate the best in writing, and it’s a ceremony that HBO has long been a part of. HBO managed to pull in 11 nominations this year, which is a strong showing but doesn’t blow the other networks out of the water. This is also the first appearance at this particular award ceremony for Westworld.

HBO has 11 nominations, and that means that it will be battling itself ion multiple categories. Check out the list:

  • Game of Thrones and Westworld for Drama Series
  • Silicon Valley and Veep for Comedy Series
  • Westworld for New Series
  • Confirmation for Long Form Original
  • The Night Of for Long Form Adapted
  • Game of Thrones, “The Winds of Winter,” for Episodic Drama
  • Last Week Tonight with John Oliver for Comedy/Variety

More from Show Snob

While it would be excellent for Westworld to beat out Game of Thrones for Drama Series, it would be surprising if it happened. Game of Thrones is still a beast, and season 6 was (and continues to be) much celebrated. Even though Westworld had an excellent and much-loved first season, Game of Thrones is still something else entirely. It is, however, a shoe-in for New Series, and we fully expect it to win.

In terms of the matchup between Veep and Silicon Valley, it’s a forgone conclusion that Veep will win. Veep is a force to be reckoned with. Silicon Valley is a great show, but it can’t win when the two are always in competition.

Next: The final season of The Leftovers is coming in the Spring.

It’s also great to see a nomination for The Night Of. Whether or not there will be a second season at some point isn’t as important as it getting some deserved recognition. While the series did have its fair share of faults, it presented an unflinching look at the failures of the criminal justice system.

The Writers Guild Awards will take place on February 19th, and will be hosted by Patton Oswalt.
